Sometimes a break from social media is needed. If you want to step away from Instagram for a while, deactivation is a great option. Unlike deleting your account permanently, deactivation temporarily hides your profile and activity while giving you the flexibility to return at any time. You may also delete your account permanently if you choose to.
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
Deactivating or Deleting Your Account on the Instagram App
Log in to the Instagram app and tap on the three horizontal lines shown on the top right corner of the screen.
1. Tap on "Settings and Privacy"
2. Select "Accounts Center" and scroll down to "Personal Details"
3. Tap on "Account Ownership and Control" and select "Deactivation or Deletion"
4. Choose the Instagram account you want to deactivate or delete and follow the instructions.
NOTE:
- You may be asked to enter your password for confirmation.
- Deactivation is immediate.
- Your profile, photos, comments, and likes will be hidden until you reactivate your account.
- You can only deactivate your account once per week.
Deactivating or Deleting Your Account on the Instagram Web
1. Log in to your Instagram account: Go to the Instagram website (https://www.instagram.com/) and log in to your account using your username/email and password.
2. Access Profile: Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner and then select "Settings."
3. Account Settings: In the settings menu, scroll down and locate "Temporarily disable my account" (sometimes listed within "Edit Profile"). Click on this option.
4. Reason for Deactivating: Instagram will ask you to select a reason for deactivation from a dropdown menu. Choose the reason that best represents your situation.
5. Re-enter Password: Enter your password to confirm the deactivation.
6. Click 'Temporarily Deactivate Account': Finally, click on the button that reads "Temporarily Deactivate Account."
Reactivating Your Account
To get back on Instagram, simply log in with your usual username and password. Your account will be restored.
Deactivation vs. Deletion
Deactivation: Temporary, allows you to return whenever you want; while
Deletion: Permanent, erases your Instagram presence completely.
