Here are the initial impressions of the recently revealed Toyota Kayoibako electric van concept. The term "Kayoibako" translates to "community traveling box," portraying this van as an adaptable canvas capable of meeting diverse customer needs.
To emphasize the versatility of its advanced battery-electric vehicle architecture, the Toyota Kayoibako van utilizes the foundational chassis and battery platform shared with the recently unveiled Toyota FT-Se Concept sports car and the versatile Toyota FT-3e Concept crossover. This transformation results in a boxy, multipurpose van. "Kayoibako" is a term used in Toyota assembly plants to denote the boxes delivering parts to the production line, but it also carries the connotation of a "community box."
At the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, formerly the Tokyo Motor Show, showcased units of the Kayoibako demonstrated various applications, including a last-mile delivery van, a camping/RV, and a wheelchair-accessible mobility vehicle.
Beyond wheelchair accessibility for passengers, other images suggest a custom-designed wheelchair specifically engineered to securely lock into the driving position behind the steering wheel.
The Kayoibako van is equipped with a steering yoke-type helm adorned with numerous controls on the spokes and an iPad-sized touchscreen within easy reach.
Most of the instrumentation is distributed across a slim, wide screen that divides the main windshield from a lower window, providing visibility of the immediate surroundings—useful for navigating through tight urban environments.
As of now, there have been no announcements regarding production plans.
