The Volvo EM90, a luxurious electric MPV, aims to deliver a "comfortable living room experience" and boasts an impressive range of over 450 miles. This marks the third addition to Volvo's lineup in the past year, following the EX90 SUV and EX30 crossover. Positioned as a technologically advanced competitor to vehicles like the Lexus LM and Mercedes V-Class, the EM90 is designed primarily for the Chinese market, where it is currently available for pre-order.
Based on Zeekr's 009 MPV, a sibling brand, the EM90 features its own distinct interior and exterior design aligned with Volvo's aesthetic. Although the MPV segment is new for Volvo, the EM90 embodies the concept of versatility, a hallmark of the brand since its inception 70 years ago, drawing inspiration from the 1953 Duett estate.
Equipped with a 116kWh battery, the EM90 achieves a range of 458 miles on China's CLTC testing cycle. Its battery can be charged from 10-80% capacity in under 30 minutes. The rear axle hosts a 268bhp motor, propelling the EM90 from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. While Volvo has not confirmed the availability of the Zeekr 009's top-tier twin-motor powertrain, the focus for the EM90 is on opulence and rolling refinement.
The interior showcases a six-seater configuration, featuring armchair-style lounge seats in the middle row and a conventional pair in the rear. The middle-row seats are adjustable, reclining electrically, heated, and ventilated.
Equipped with folding tray tables, individual haptic control panels, and a 15.6in ceiling-mounted screen for streaming and meetings, the interior emphasizes advanced functionality. The voice assistant allows users to transform the interior into a theater, meeting room, or bedroom with a single command.
The front cabin maintains Volvo's minimalist design, housing a 15.4in infotainment screen and a separate driver display interface. While Volvo has not disclosed other potential markets for the EM90, it emphasizes that it is initially launching in China. The brand will assess the global demand for MPVs before considering a broader market release.
